Commodity Codes

The County utilizes commodity or service codes as a coding taxonomy to classify products and services procured by the County. Through uniform coding and other management mechanisms, commodity codes provide control over procurement processes, making them more organized and more efficient. They are also an important tool for the identification of suppliers’ products and services.

The County utilizes both National Institute of Governmental Purchasing (NIGP) Code and United Nations Standard Products and Services Code (UNSPC)  for classification of its products and services, to manage suppliers and ensure adequate competition as well as outreach to increase diversity across spend areas, thereby reducing overall procurement risk by identifying spend areas where competition is weak and supplier recruitment is needed.

Visit the NIGP and UNSPSC websites for more information on commodity codes and for search tools for the most appropriate commodity codes for your products and/or services.
